Some people come to Koh Tao to party. Others come to exhale. If you're the second kind, head south to Chalok.
Tucked into the island's southern coast, Chalok Baan Kao is the mellow counterpoint to Sairee: a sheltered bay, calmer water, lower prices and a slower rhythm. It's a favourite with families, freedivers and remote workers who want the island without the crowd.
Slow mornings
Chalok's bay is shallow, calm and made for drifting. Snorkel straight off the beach, paddle a kayak around the headland, or just claim a hammock and watch the boats swing on their moorings. Everything here moves at half speed.
It's also the gateway to some of Koh Tao's best-loved corners: Shark Bay, just next door, is the island's most reliable spot to snorkel with green turtles, and Freedom Beach is a short hop over the hill.
Come south when you want the island to slow down.
Work, eat, stay a while
The south has quietly become Koh Tao's work-from-anywhere corner. Taoni sums it up: a French restaurant, coworking space and boutique in one Balinese-style spot in Chalok Bay, with homemade food, fast Wi-Fi and a garden to think in.
Answer your emails over a proper lunch, then close the laptop and be in the sea within minutes. It's the kind of trade the south does very well.
Calm water, big views and no rush. Here's how to spend your days in Koh Tao's laid-back south.
A short, steep scramble from Chalok rewards you with the island's most photographed view: twin bays curving away on either side. Go early, or for sunset.
Next door to Chalok, Shark Bay (Ao Thian Ok) is the most reliable place on Koh Tao to snorkel alongside green sea turtles. Bring a mask and go gently.
Set up for the day at Taoni with fast Wi-Fi, good coffee and homemade French food, then be in the water by lunchtime.
A short walk over the headland, this little cove is one of the prettiest, quietest patches of sand on the island.
Chalok's whole point is the slow day: a hammock, a book, a swim, a sunset. Lean into it.
