Slow down, reconnect with your body and find your breath, above and below the water.
Blue Chitta is a yoga and freediving centre on the hillside above Mae Haad, a short walk from the pier where the ferries arrive. It was created to help people slow down, reconnect with their body and explore their full potential, through yoga, meditation and breath control. For anyone looking for yoga on Koh Tao, it is the place to start.
The open-air shala looks out over the bay, and the weekly schedule runs from early morning to evening: Vinyasa, Ashtanga, Hatha and Yin, morning meditation and breathwork, and dedicated classes for people who have never done yoga before. A large team of teachers means lots of styles and levels every week. Mats and props are provided.
Regular classes are drop-in: come 10 to 15 minutes early and pay at reception. Booking is recommended for sunset and weekend classes, when the shala fills up.
Every morning at 6:30, Blue Chitta teaches a gentle sunrise flow at High the Moon, a café perched high above the island, blending breath and movement as the light comes up over the sea. These classes need booking the day before.
Beyond the classes there is a weekly programme of workshops on breath, the nervous system, mindfulness and conscious movement: Yin Yoga and Sound Healing in the evening, Breath and Ice Bath sessions, arm balances, inversions, acro yoga and full-moon ceremonies. There is even yoga on a boat, followed by a guided freedive and snorkel over the reefs.
Freediving is the other half of Blue Chitta. Yoga and freediving share the same foundations, breath, relaxation and focus, and the centre teaches both, from a first discovery session to instructor level. It is a rare chance to train the two together.
Blue Chitta runs holistic yoga and freediving retreats on set dates, and a self-retreat that starts every day, so you can arrive whenever your ferry does. Retreat guests stay on site, eat wholesome vegetarian food at Prana Café, join daily classes and holistic workshops and share the days with a warm community. For future teachers there is a 200-hour Yoga Alliance teacher training blending Ashtanga, Yin, breathwork and sound healing.
Blue Chitta is in Mae Haad, on the west coast of Koh Tao, a few minutes from the pier. From the ferry, take a taxi or walk up and ask for Blue Chitta. The weekly schedule, prices and bookings are on bluechitta.com.
