Koh Tao beaches / Freedom Beach
A small white-sand cove on the south coast, with a reef at one end and a viewpoint walk close by.
Freedom Beach Koh Tao, also called Taa Toh Lagoon beach, is a short pocket of pale sand tucked between Chalok and Shark Bay. It is one of the prettier swimming spots in the south: calm water on most days, shade from the trees and a laid-back feel that suits a slow half day.
It sits on private land, so there is a small entrance fee. In return you get a tidy beach, hammocks and an easy base for the nearby John-Suwan viewpoint. Here is what to expect before you go.

The beach is split into two small areas joined by a shaded path through the trees. Sand is fine and white, and staff keep it clean. Hammocks hang in the shade, and a simple restaurant sits over the water at the eastern corner.
It is rarely empty by the afternoon, but it never feels like a party beach. Most visitors come to swim, read and hop into the water now and then. At high tide a good part of the sand can disappear, so check the tide if you want space to lay a towel.
Entry from the sand is easy and the water is usually clear. For snorkelling, the reef is close to shore on the Buddha Rock (Hin Taa Toh) side. Coral grows very shallow near the edge in places, so wear fins or water shoes and keep your feet off the reef. Better coral and more fish are found a little further out, but only go there in calm conditions and when you are comfortable in open water.
The beach faces west, so it is sheltered when the wind blows from the east and good for a late-afternoon dip. If the weather is rough everywhere else, try a different bay: see our guide to snorkelling on Koh Tao for alternatives, or Aow Leuk and Tanote Bay when the wind is from the west.

From Sairee or Mae Haad it takes about 10 to 15 minutes by scooter or taxi. Head south through Chalok, then follow the signs for John-Suwan viewpoint and Taa Toh. Park in the small car park and walk a few minutes to the sand. Typing "Taa Toh Lagoon Beach" into your maps app also works.
For the broader picture on island transport, see getting around Koh Tao.
The beach is run privately, and there is a small fee, which also covers Taa Toh Bay and the John-Suwan viewpoint. Some say a bottle of water is included. Staff may not be at the gate early in the morning. The fee has changed over the years, so carry small notes.
There is a restaurant and a small bar, toilets, shaded seating, hammocks and a few beach chairs. Bring your own mask and snorkel if you can, as rental is not always on offer.
Go early for quiet and cooler walking weather, or late afternoon for sunset light. The calmest water is generally March to September. In November and December the weather can turn windy and wet, so check the forecast. More on this in our best time to visit Koh Tao guide.
The John-Suwan viewpoint is an uphill walk of roughly 20 minutes from the car park and gives you a wide view over the south of the island. It is a good sunrise spot, and the same ticket usually covers it. Bring water and sturdy shoes. More lookouts are listed in Koh Tao viewpoints and hikes, and Shark Bay is a short ride away: see Shark Bay.
Yes, a small one, which also covers Taa Toh Bay and the John-Suwan viewpoint. Early in the morning nobody may be collecting it.
Ride or take a taxi south through Chalok and follow the signs for John-Suwan viewpoint and Taa Toh. It takes about 10 to 15 minutes, then a few minutes on foot from the car park.
It is decent. There is a shallow reef on the Buddha Rock side, but watch your feet near the edge. The best coral and fish are further out, so only go in calm water.
Early morning for peace and sunrise at the viewpoint, or late afternoon for sunset. March to September is usually the calmest.
There is a small restaurant and bar over the water, toilets, hammocks in the shade and some beach chairs. It is a simple set-up rather than a beach club.
They are neighbours. Freedom Beach and Taa Toh Lagoon sit next to each other and one ticket usually covers both.
