A granite maze of tunnels, canyons and triggerfish.
Green Rock sits off the north-west of Koh Nang Yuan, and it's unlike anything else around Koh Tao: a huge pile of granite boulders riddled with swim-throughs, tunnels, caverns and canyons, from about 5 metres down to 28.
Threading the passages is the whole point, which is why the site suits confident divers best: there's depth, occasional current and plenty of overhead rock. Advanced certification is recommended to enjoy it properly, though the shallower sections are manageable for newer divers with a guide who knows the rock.
North of the main boulders lie the famous trigger pits, a sandy area where titan and yellowmargin triggerfish dig their nests. Around April to June they guard them with legendary enthusiasm, and every divemaster on the island knows exactly how wide a detour to swim.
Between the rocks you'll find barracuda, Jenkins whiprays, angelfish, nudibranchs, banded sea kraits and both hawksbill and green turtles passing through.
Off the north-west side of Koh Nang Yuan, a few minutes beyond Twins and Japanese Gardens. It often features on north-coast two-dive mornings.
